Vol 9

The end is nigh.

Fantastic volume. I can't believe there's only one left for me to read. I love this so fucking much and don't want it to end.

Things are reaching a head between Death and the other horsemen, especially his most hated of the three, War. Shit's about to kick off.

War is looming on the horizon between the nations of America. The end of the world is in sight and I really can't wait to see how it all ends. But the way things are looking currently in the story--and the general tone and outlook the series has had so far--I can't see it being a happy ending. All I want is Death and his family to be safe. And maybe Wolf, Crow, and Crown Prince John to get out alive. The rest are terrible people and can go hang. Great characters... but terrible people.

The art is stunning and goes from strength to strength. Every page is a winner and has me stopping to appreciate. There's this gorgeously depicted stand-off between Death and War painted in a striking contrast of red and white within a field of tall grass and it's so beautiful and dynamic on the page, that I sat for ages just staring at the beauty, contemplating whether it would be a bad thing to buy another volume of nine just to slice out those two pages and frame them. (One day. One day for sure.) Simply stunning.

Did I immediately buy volume ten as soon as finishing volume nine?

Yes...yes I did.

No regrets.

Vol 10

Here it is, the end of things. The final volume in the series. This still remains my favourite graphic novel series. A bittersweet ending to what's been a brilliant story from start to finish. I can't believe it's over now. I've had nothing but a good time with this and can't recommend it enough. An insanely excellent mash-up of genres, there's something here for everybody. A futuristic, dystopian, sci-fi western, dripping with action and political intrigue, and at the heart of it all, a love story. If you don't enjoy one element, you'll be sure to find one that you do.

Action-packed but full of heart, this story is seeped in finding love through all the hate and conflict. It's the slither of hope all the characters cling to within a bleak world and an apocalyptic outlook.

The conclusion wraps everything up pretty nicely, and the characters all either get what they deserve or what they desire. I won't spoil anything, so I'll leave you to decide who gets what.

There was only one thing that could have made the ending even better for me, but I think deep down, I knew it was never meant to be, hence the bitter side to what is otherwise a sweet ending.

The artwork, at this point, needs no praise, but I'll praise it anyway. Gorgeous, gruesome, and stunningly coloured. This series on the whole is a true masterpiece.

I loved it. Plain and simple. Do not make my mistake and sleep on this series. This is truly something else. What a wild journey, and worth every minute of it.
