3.75*

This was more enjoyable than the first book, mainly because Jude wasn’t being constantly bullied by Cardan. I liked him a lot more in this book. There were times when he actually seemed like he cared.

However, as much as I like Cardan now, a small part of me can’t help but be disappointed in Jude for falling in love with her bully. Bullies aren’t attractive, even if they’re good looking, their vindictive nature makes them unattractive. I dunno, maybe I’m just the unforgiving type when it comes to this sort of thing, but I certainly have never had any romantic desire towards any of my former bullies. The relationship between Jude and Cardan has me very conflicted. The thought of someone falling in love with their abuser is rather a turn off, and nothing if not toxic. Let’s hope he can redeem himself in the next book.

I think a part of me will always hate Cardan for his behaviour towards Jude, and no amount of angsty, steamy romance or subtle, secret confessions will fix that.

I really enjoyed all the court politics happening in this book. I feel it really stepped it up, and it was a lot of fun to read. That being said, this did feel like something of a filler book. Typical second book syndrome. Though better than book one, it still feels like it’s main objective is setting the stage for book 3. Other than the brewing war with the undersea, I didn’t feel that this book had an actual plot. It’s just building up. It’s the held breath before the plunge and it sort of feels that way. Just when it seems like the story is about to finally kick off, the book ends.

This was a fun book, but it’s promising a lot of the third book, and I really hope it’s able to deliver.
