I never got around to writing a full review for this book, probably because even now, over a week later, I still don't really know how I feel about it.
I think I liked it. It was okay, but nothing amazing.
And when I feel this way about books, I end up putting off reviewing them.
So instead, I'll share my mini review from Instagram. It more or less sums up my thoughts.
WHAT I DISLIKED
• It was a tad slow at times.
• I'm a little sceptical by the lack of nasty/desperate people. In a crisis like this, I don't feel like people would be generally kind enough to help them instead of kill them for their supplies. (But that's just me - oh ye of little faith in humanity.)
• It was probably longer than it needed to be.
• Animal violence! So fucking done with seeing this in every book!
WHAT I LIKED
• The cover.
• The feeling of whimsy within this world.
• The idea of nature taking back the earth, but that the trees weren't portrayed as the enemy. They weren't outwardly violent.
• The problems they faced felt like real problems.
• And the way the mental and physical struggle of their journey felt convincing.
• I enjoyed how their group grew during their journey and I liked all the characters.
• The cast of characters felt natural. Very real. Very human. There wasn't anything particularly special about any of them. They weren't always brave and they weren't without fear. They were just people, trying to survive.
