A pretty deflated meh.
It must just be me cause every one else is raving about this book.
Am I the only one who found it rather bland?
Maybe I’ve just read too much fantasy and they’re all starting to sound the same.
The thing is, there’s nothing wrong with this book. The book is fine. The plot is fine, the pacing is fine, Even the characters and their development is find. On the face of it, this book has everything that I love in a fantasy book. However, I didn’t get into it at all. Sure I enjoyed it, but I was never at any point on the edge of my seat in anticipation to read more.
It was a totally fine book that just did absolutely nothing for me. I felt nothing, to be honest, and I can’t decide if that’s worse than hating a book.
The one thing that I did noticeably roll my eyes at was the constant journal and letter extracts at the start of every chapter filling us in on all the history of the world. It was info-dumpy and got on my nerves. Sorry.
I’m a bit gutted, to be honest, because I really wanted to like this series but it was just so average to me. I know it must be me. All the 4 and 5 star ratings on Goodreads can’t be wrong and I’m glad that people enjoyed it, it’s just not for me.
I liked the premise. The synopsis intrigued me. It would surely tick all the boxes. But whilst actually reading it, I simply had no enthusiasm for it whatsoever, nor do I really have any enthusiasm to write this review, hence why I’m not going into details; I just don’t really care enough to do so.
