2.5*

This was okay. I certainly didn't hate it, but it's very 'of its time', so I'm not going to judge a book written decades ago based on today's standards. That being said, Turin was an arrogant arsehole who seemingly pretended to be the hero, and everyone treated him as such, but really, he just took what he wanted and never acknowledged the consequences of his actions. He was such an entitled fuck, and a typical Mary Sue. Not only was he apparently good at everything, but he was also a toxic macho-man.

Are we going to talk about the incest? No? Okay, I won't mention it. Blegh.

The women in this book, besides being few and far between, are all flimsy and couldn't seem to do anything except swoon or be easily manipulated.

But look, all criticism aside, I love Tolkien and the vast world he created. His world-building is second to none. Though definitely over-cooked, in fairness, we only read these 'bonus' novels for the extra world-building. If The Hobbit is the starter, Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion are definitely the main course. I tend to think of his other novels as seasoning to the amazing world he built. Naturally, not all will be to my taste, but they do add some flavour.

Okay, enough food analogies.

I didn't love this, didn't hate it. Don't regret reading it, but I certainly won't be reading it again.
